Artist Statement

Dr. Amber Woodward

My work explores the intersection of memory, emotion, and transformation through layered, mixed media. I specialize in photography, ceramics, painting, digital design, and assemblage, combining found objects with original imagery to create pieces that invite viewers into deeply personal and often reflective spaces. I am particularly drawn to the process of overlaying historic photographs onto painted surfaces, creating visual narratives that bridge past and present.

Recently, my focus has returned to that of grief art. These pieces serve as both personal expressions and invitations for others to engage with the healing process. I am currently considering developing workshops in the Bay Area that encourage participants to explore their own stories through creative expression. Prior to the return to remembrance art, I completed a series of large-scale abstract landscapes incorporate textured sewing pattern backgrounds and overlays, emphasizing depth, movement, and emotional resonance. I also did a series of 10 abstract landscape paintings on boards, focusing on uplifting transformations from the physical to the spiritual realm.

As an artist and educator with over two decades of experience, I believe in the power of art to transform and empower. My practice is rooted in the belief that creativity is a pathway to self-discovery, connection, and healing. Every piece I create is an extension of this belief, offering a space where complexity and beauty can coexist.
